ANIMAL RESCUE & SUPPORT
COMPANION ANIMALS
For many Tanzanians, dogs and cats are not considered "pets," but "low-grade livestock" to guard homes, fields and other livestock's. The owners , usually kick and beat their own animals with stick and stones for no reason.
In many homes dogs & cats don't have their own place to sleep like a kennel. They are constantly exposed to strong sunlight, heavy rain, cold and strong winds.
There is no custom of putting a collar or leash on dogs in Tanzania, few owners regularly feed them with nutritious food and since most premises are not fenced these starved dogs roam free out of their homes to look for food.
They roam around garbage dumps, restaurants and local bars day and night, searching for food to sustain their life.
This is why it is very difficult to distinguish between a dog or a cat with a home and a stray dog in Tanzania.
Due to the lack of veterinary services and clinics , many dogs & cats are not castrated and vaccinated, the spreading of diseases is high and their population is booming.
Due to this free roaming nature many male dogs fight with instinct during matting season and get seriously injured, many lost their lives from untreated wounds.
Road kills are also taking lives of many companion and wild animals in Tanzania because there are only few signs to remind the drivers to take extra cautions with the animals near the road.
Also there are very few veterinary clinics in Tanzania, if an animal is sick you have to call a local government vet officer who will show up with no test kits and without necessary medicines.
There is an animal welfare act of 2008 but most of the people are unaware of it because the acts provisions are not enforced.
WILD ANIMALS
There are more than four million wild animals in Tanzania representing 430 different species and subspecies. The country houses some 20% of Africa's large mammal population. Zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeest, buffaloes, hippos, antelopes, primates and gazelles are common animals. All these animals are threatened due to poaching, habitat fragmentation, hunting, illegal wildlife trade and road kills. In many cases if a mother die from either poaching, sickness or road accident the babies remain with no help and most will be disposed back in the wild to survive their lucky. there are very few wildlife orphanage to rare these orphan wildlife in Tanzania.
We want to expand our rescue facility to be able to accommodate all variety animals including wild animals.
Our organization office is located in Rhotia Village which is very close to Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area,Tarangire National Park and Serengeti National park, Our hope is to help wild animals in need from these parks too.
FARM ANIMALS
KARIBU Animal Trail is the only animal charity in Tanzania which is fighting for the liberation of farm animals. We believe that all animals are equal and speciesism has no place in our modern world. But our fight is different from other charities in developed countries with majority of people depending on various economic activities for survival.
Tanzania population includes more than 120 different ethnic tribal groups with 80 % of the people live in rural areas under extreme poverty. These people depends on small scale agriculture, nomadic pastoralism, fishing and hunting for their survival. Tribes like Hadzabes are still living in the bush hunting for wild animals and foraging for plants, fruits and tubers. While other tribes like Datoga,Sonjo and Masai are entirely depending on nomadic livestock keeping for their survival
Despite of living in the bush for years, using animals for their survival and being the most tourism attraction in the country, their poverty status has never changed. Knowledge is power, KAT believes that one of the most effective way to help farm animals in the least developed countries like Tanzania is to improve the lives of the people and equip them with new skills and knowledge which will help them to divert to other survival and economical activities that will not linked to animal exploitation. This is why we need every Sigle person with different skills to work with us to help animals in Tanzania. Our volunteer program is open to everyone.
WHAT WE DO

We take any injured and sick animal to the vet clinic in Arusha town.

After treatment we start to search all about his or her home, the owner and life background.

If it is a dog or a cat with no clear evidence of being owned then we consider them as stray and so we give them a forever home which is our center.

For now we have 4 adults dogs,9 puppies and one kitten.

We take a very good care of our rescue everyday, we provide nutritious food, fleas and ticks treatment, vaccination, castration for the adults to prevent over population, walking exercises, comfort and shelter of their own fit.

For wild animals, we rescue the victim under the supervision of Tanzania Wildlife Authority. Rearing a wild animal in Tanzania require special facilities and permits which we don't have for now.

CHALLENGES

There is no veterinary clinic in our town, we have to travel 4 to 5 hours with the injured or sick animal to get veterinary services to the near by town. This is very dangerous when the animal need emergency treatment, it is also a very expensive journey which involve a lot of money in terms of transport, meal and accommodation.

Insufficient fund - Our rescue activity is entirely depend on in kind donation from people like you, Our organization is still growing and we don't have the sufficient funds and supplies to support our rescue activities and reach more animals in need. Sometimes we run out funds to support our own rescued animals.

We don't have our own rescue facility - We use our rental house as a current rescue facility. The number of our rescue animals keep growing, the space become tiny as time goes.So we need one of our own.
OUR NEXT MOVE

To raise donation and build the first veterinary clinic in Karatu town that will serve all animals of Karatu district and other nearby places.

To raise donation and build our own rescue facility for the abandoned, neglected, abused, sick, injured and orphaned wild and domestic animals.
